plique-a-jour enamel

Rene Lalique
Dog collar, circa 1900
Gold; Plique-à-jour enamel, old mine-cut diamonds, green enamel
Signed Lalique for René Lalique
Christie's "Rare Jewels and Gemstones: Eye of the Connoisseur"

A perfect Art Nouveau jewel. This piece, depicting a winged and female sylph is in direct reaction to the machine age and industry of the late 19th century. The use of materials such as glass and enamel was completely novel at this time. Another difference was the use of yellow gold rather than platinum. The gold gives the piece a sunny warm that platinum could not achieve.
